Our Specialist Resourced Provision (SRP), Horizon, provides highly effective specialist support for pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) whose primary needs relate to social communication difficulties. The provision is fully integrated within the mainstream school and enables pupils to access a personalised academic and social skills curriculum alongside opportunities to learn and socialise with peers who work in similar ways to them.
Our leaders are establishing a nurturing and well-resourced learning environment that is being carefully designed to meet pupils’ individual needs. Dedicated classrooms, calm spaces, a sensory room, an independent living skills room and specialist intervention areas support pupils’ communication, learning, emotional regulation and independence. Our team have expertise in working with children who learn in different ways and use a range of evidence-informed creative approaches to ensure that learning is accessible, multisensory and engaging.
The curriculum is adapted creatively to match pupils’ starting points and individual targets. Pupils benefit from small-group teaching, personalised learning programmes and visual communication systems that help them develop their literacy, numeracy, social communication and independent learning and life skills. Our team maintain the high expectations of achievement and personal development for all pupils with the aim of removing barriers to ensure our pupils become as independent as possible in both social and academic areas of life.
A particular strength of the provision is the careful and flexible approach to inclusion. Pupils access mainstream classes and wider school experiences at a level appropriate to their needs. As their confidence, independence and social understanding develop, many pupils increase the time they spend learning alongside their mainstream peers. This encourages them to generalise the skills they learn in the Horizon SRP in a wider range of contexts.
Our team members work closely with families, occupational and speech and language therapists and outreach services from special schools to ensure pupils receive coordinated support to make accelerated progress against the outcomes of their EHCPlans with the ultimate aim that children become increasingly independent and participate fully in school life. The provision contributes significantly to the school’s inclusive culture and reflects a strong commitment to meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities and ensures those in the mainstream school develop empathy and understanding for those who learn and communicate in ways which might be different to them.
